From the banks of flowing rivers, through grassy plains and sun-seared deserts, to the snowy highlands and hidden valleys of a great mountain range, the Kohten region holds many areas to explore and secrets to discover!
Geography of Kohten
The Kohten region is a located to the west of Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, and Sinnoh, but to the east of Isshu. Its western border is a long stretch of sea coast, into which flow a number of rivers that wend across the region, flowing mostly from east to west. While a large portion of the area is grassland, there are sizeable patches of desert in the north and southeast, and dense forests grow in the south and southwestern areas. Rocky hills can be found in the central regions, and a sizeable mountain chain stretches along the northern and part of the western borders.
Climate
Due to the region’s size, the climate varies noticeably as one travels across Kohten. In the northern desert and mountain regions, the air is hot and dry, and rainfall is scarce. Rainfall and humidity increase as one travels southward and westward; the coastal regions in particular are very humid and hot. The shady forest areas are often cool, and rainfall there is plentiful year-round.
Seasonally, the weather varies the most in the northern and eastern areas. There, it can become quite cold in winter, and snowfall is common. Winters in the southern and western areas are cool but usually not frigid, and are marked by increased rainfall. In the late summer through the fall, when storms become most common, some of the rivers tend to flood, making travel by water difficult and sometimes making the roadways impassible.
Transportation
The three principal modes of transport are by foot, by road vehicle, or by boat along the many rivers and waterways. There are also rail lines in certain areas. There are also rumored to be secret, underground transit tunnels connecting certain locations; whether there is truth to these rumors has yet to be determined….
Economically, Kohten is connected to the other regions of the Pokémon world mostly through sea and waterway routes. Some heavy rail lines and even a few experimental airships also connect Kohten to outside regions, although these are not presently open to passenger travel under regular circumstances.
Cities and Towns
While the population of Kohten is not small, the large size of the region means that the population is generally spread out into many small towns, with only a handful of very large cities. Most of the population resides in the less arid regions of the south and western lands, although some of the more rugged residents have proudly made their homes in the rough desert and mountainous lands to the north. Also notably, the headquarters of the Kohten Pokémon League is located atop one of these near-inaccessible mountain peaks.
Culture
The citizens of Kohten pride themselves on the beauty and variation of the lands in the region. The more rural citizens have a reputation for rugged self-reliance amidst the often harsh environment and unforgiving climate of the more remote areas; however, they are also known as friendly hosts to travelers who dare to venture so far out into the wilder lands.
In the coastal areas, where trade and travel are common, one can often encounter visitors from the other regions of the Pokémon world. It is also relatively easy to obtain a variety of goods and gear here, and a trainer looking for worthy opponents might find the opportunity to battle Pokémon from different regions.
Pokémon League
As with all major regions, Kohten has its own Pokémon League, with eight major Gym Leaders, as well as the traditional Elite Four and Champion. There are also a number of minor gyms in the region where one can train and battle, but which do not award Gym Badges.
